The variants ARE hurting us though - because the more time is spent on developing them, the less time is spent on other improvements to proper chess.

The solution is fxe4 but I played Rxe4. The computer gives first as -7 and second as -6. Why do such puzzles even exist?
Everything else being equal you must take towards the center. If Bobby Fischer were annotating the game fxe4 would get a ! because it is taking toward the center! Bobby Fischer never would've settled for Rxe4 and neither should you. These puzzles teach us to play like Bobby, to look for the best move, not for the obvious move.
