But here in this case it would not even be possible for white to checkmate 'cause it's the e pawn that black has.
Of course it's possible, black could promote to a knight or a bishop and get checkmated in the corner.

Everyone hates this rule.
I think in uscf, it's up to the arbiter to decide on whether they think the position is 'losable' or not. Not the case online though.
This rule is highly accepted. If one contemplates thoroughly one will see it's the lesser evil and fairer in most cases.
#17 In USCF, players play with an increment clock or delay clock, so the defender does not lose on time.
