king of the hill 960 ?

Hi,

Do you plan to implement a king of the hill 960 ?

With maybe the possibility if the player wants to, to set the position of the king on a specific location ("b1,c1 or d1" or even "d1 or e1" ...)

what to you think about this idea ?

Thank you the lichess team !

I agree with you, stross. Every variant should have an initial random position (at least as an option). I asked several times for that.
Bonjour de France :)
mm, a 960 variant of all variants.... sounds REALLY crazy
+1 for more 960 (although it might be hard to integrate in a good way)
I am really in favour of this, too. I think several of us have suggested it in the past.

Antichess in particular is highly based on theory knowledge and forced lines, and that applies to other variants (atomic as well, I was told). Fair play to those who are really into it, however I doubt this would threaten their high ratings (they might simply ignore the option altogether, and the huge benefit they get from experience makes it unlikely that someone would undertake them by playing the 960 version).
For those of us who see these as quick and easy fun, that's the point - theory kills the fun.

Just not sure about horde, where that might create a strong unbalance.
Just one more thing: I understand the point about the number of variants getting out of control. It is already high as it is, and it makes sense not to spread lichess' content indefinitely. But we're just talking about an option or setting here, similar to the time control or "Play black only". No need for extra categories or anything, is there?
Great Idea, stross! But not only KOTH, all other variants too.
Playing all variants with 960 random starting positions, according to Fischer.

This will increase a fun significantly.

And number of variants/ratings/trophies, etc. will remain the same.
You just should put those games in the same category, together with regular games.

So, ultimately there will be added one extra option to game creation - 960 checkbox:

and then this choice will be reflected with icons:

This great improvement will make Lichess website an undisputed King of all online chess sites in the Universe.
I love that idea! Although I'm not so sure about putting both the normal variant of a variant (yep, that makes sense) in the same category as the 960 variant of it. Especially with things like Antichess and Atomic, learning some lines is actually part of the variant. Making a 960 variant count for the same rating might not actually work out, because not all people that are good at the variant will be good at the 960 variant of the variant and the other way around.

Also, something that would be incredibly cool is tickboxes for all of these variants when creating a game:
-King of the Hill
-Threecheck
-Crazyhouse
-Chess 960
-Atomic
That way, you could race with your king to the center from a rondom starting position while being careful not to get mated or checked three times, also not giving your opponent giving too many pieces because he can reuse them, and making sure no pieces around your king can get captured.

IT SOUNDS AMAZING!!
Yeah, because using a two variants at the same time was not absurdly crazy enough, let's throw an atomic three check crazyhouse, let's see if someone manages to survive more than 10 turns...
Oh, and Kings race forbids checks so three check+king's racing is by definition impossible, and atomic+race also seems impossible to prevent a draw
